Ancient elevators were tracked even back in the Middle Ages that functioned by human or animal power or water-driven mechanisms. During the 1800's, elevators operated by steam or hydraulic plungers inside a vertical cylinder. Water from the water main and later under high pressure pumped by steam forced the plunger up and carried the elevator up. The relaxation of pressure allowed the plunger to sink, carrying the elevator down.
In 1853, Elisha Graves Otis exhibited at Crystal Palace in New York a passenger elevator operated by steam. History says that in order to test the safety device, Elisha Otis fixed the car at 10 meters above the ground, walked into the elevator and ordered to cut the rope that sustained the car. The car started descending but surprisingly and fortunately after a few seconds it stopped. The device he invented functioned impeccably. He obtained the patent for this invention on January 15, 1861.
The first elevators approximately similar to what we see today started appearing in the 19th century, while the first passenger elevator was installed in 1857 by the Otis Elevator Company at 488 Broadway in New York City.
